How Spatial Variation Affects Plant Phenology
Abstract
Climate change effects the timing of phenology, which can have consequences on plants and their pollinators. A critical reason for this is due to early snowmelt. However, there are other variables that could affect phenology. In heterogenous environments, plants could be buffered by these variables, thus understanding them will help understand the different effects climate change has over space. This study aims to focus on environmental variability within the East River Watershed. The results of this observational study shows that environmental variability has an effect on the timing of phenology. Moreover, three variables were discovered to have a correlation with phenology timing; elevation, timing of snow melt, and maximum soil moisture. Further studies that observe other variables, along with previous ones that could be reperformed with more data, will help us further understand how landscape affects our ecosystems.
